How to Grease a Ratchet Wrench

A ratchet wrench is a tool that is used to tighten or loosen bolts. It is usually a part of a set, which comes with several different size sockets. It is not uncommon for the sockets for the wrench to become stuck after using them over a period of time. Applying some grease to the wrench can rectify this problem.

How to Grease a Ratchet Wrench

  1. Try to pull the socket off by hand if it gets stuck on the ratchet wrench. If that does not work hold the wrench with one hand so that it can be easily turned to the area where the socket attaches to the ratchet.

  2. Spray some grease onto the wrench. Any type of spray lubricant will work such as WD40, which can be purchased at most automotive part stores. Do not use a thick lubricant because it will impede the proper engagement of the racket wrench mechanism. Be prepared for the grease to leave a mess by having some old towels or rags on hand.

  3. Use an old rag to hold the ratchet and turn it to try to remove the socket. If it is still stuck spray some more grease on it and try to remove it again. It is highly recommended that you grease your ratchet wrench at least once a year to keep this from happening in the future.
